House of Cards House Design
Have you been keeping up with the latest tv shows and entertainment news? If the answer is yes, then you know there couldn't be a more appropriate time to talk about House of Cards decor than now! The tv series that pretty much made binge-watching a thing has just returned, and with it came a lot of drama and criticism to the American political scene. However, you might have noticed by now that that is honestly not our thing, so what we really would like to talk about is the incredible production design behind the scenes and what makes this tv show as amazing as it is. Because much more than a thrilling plot, top of the notch actors and great directors, you can't make a show without a production design team, and we have been showing you how much this is true for the past five weeks. So, sit back and get ready for another 'Inside the Screen' moment, completely dedicated to the show that keeps everyone glued to their tv's and laptops!
The production designer responsible for making the House of Cards ' world come true and into our homes is Steve Arnold. This is the man that put together some of the best depictions and interpretations of the White House we have ever seen, and that took it further in more than one set to create an even more powerful image of their world. But we'll get there, so just keep scrolling…
Arnold talked to Architectural Digest when season four premiered, stating that "the show has a very specific look and feel to it, which is something that [executive producer] David Fincher was heavily involved with in the beginning. His movies all have a certain look and spareness. The colors and spacial relationships are very controlled. It gives a solemnity and a seriousness that fit with the subject matter of the show."
For Frank and Claire Underwood's home, the designers came up with an interior Victorian architecture , which includes tall ceilings and windows with wooden shutters—"to control what people can see inside," says Arnold—plus pocket doors and classic lighting fixtures. However, when Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey arrived on set they insisted that the interiors should have a touch of modernity. "So we took the idea that Claire was interested in photography and included more contemporary artwork," explained the designer.
For the White House sets, however, the Netflix show production design team did not actually get to go inside the White House's private quarters to gather information and inspiration for their sets. Steve Arnold explained that "Nobody really gets to go up there unless they're staff or Secret Service." So, in order to re-create the residential spaces, the production team turned to archival photographs and materials from the Historic American Buildings Survey.
In the real White House, the room that serves as Claire's bedroom is actually a dining room. "The writer wanted to separate Frank and Claire in their own spaces," Arnold says. "We didn't really need the dining room, so we turned that into a bedroom for Claire."
Also,"the real residence's bathroom is much, much smaller," says Arnold. "I had to take some artistic license for the show and make it a little more over the top."
There are also multiple classic and luxury elements throughout all the sets. Lighting and colors make all the difference, and the designers definitely knew how to play with that. If you follow the series closely, you might have noticed how all the interior design palettes are kept fairly simple and neutral, with light colors and multiple sober details. This contrasts with the actors clothing, with is usually darker. This allows for a more sophisticated vibe across the settings and a high-end look throughout the series.
